How To Prepare Yourself For The IDC/IE

Please check that the following prerequisites have been met:

You need to be a current/renewed Dive master or Assistant Instructor,
or a current Instructor affiliated with another certification agency.

  • IDC Requirement, have been a certified diver for a minimum of 6 months with 60 logged dives.

  • IE Requirement, have been a certified diver for a minimum 6 months with 100 logged dives.

  • Submit proof of CPR training within the last 24 months. The Padi EFR course is recommended.

  • You need to be at least 18 years of age.

  • Submit a medical statement verifying that you are fit for diving and signed by a physician within the last 12 months. The Padi medical statement is recommended.

Please bring all certification cards from Open Water up to Divemaster / Assistant Instructor level. If you are missing some of these cards you need to verify it through Padi. Ask for an E-mail or fax confirming your certification level and Padi number. If you have any certification cards from another agency you need to make photo copies, which we will send to Padi.

Please purchase the following Padi material prior to the IDC:

Padi Instructor Development Lesson Guides
New and updated Instructor Manual

IDC candidate workbook

Open water & confined cue cards

Open water & confined water lesson preparation slates

Answer as many knowledge reviews from the candidate workbook as possible.

Familiarize yourself with the Instructor Manual and have a look at the latest issues of The Undersea Journal & Training Bulletins. Make sure that your dive theory (physics, physiology, the RDP, skills & environment and equipment) is updated by using the new Encyclopedia of Recreational diving and the workbook. Make sure to answer all questions in the new Dive master exam.

Go Diving !!

  • Assist your Instructor on as many different Padi courses as possible.

  • Practice all your diving skills - especially the 20 skills of the Padi skill circuit.

  • Concentrate especially on your buoyancy skills: hovering and fin pivots, out of air skills: Buddy Breathing and Alternate Air Source both stationary and swimming, the controlled emergency swimming ascent (CESA) and your equipment removal skills: scuba unit and weight belt - both at the surface and underwater.

  • Remember although an Open Water Diver can "do the skill", this is usually a long way off from the demonstration quality expected of an IDC candidate.

  • You can review the skills on the Padi Open Water video or CD-ROM. When was the last time YOU demonstrated any of these skills??

  • If possible get a Padi instructor to show you the Rescue Diver Exercise #7: "Unconscious Diver on the surface". You can review an excellent demonstration of this on The PADI Rescue Diver video.

  • Check all your dive equipment and make sure everything is well serviced, up to date and ready for diving.

  • Complete the IDC application form and fax it to us as soon as possible.

  • Place your booking early to take advantage of our package deals.

  • Contact us using our E-mail. We will confirm your reservation by E-mail or by fax.
